Dungeon Defenders Review :3

Hiii :D

So my second review is going to be yet another Tower Defense. This game is called Dungeon Defenders and goes under an Action Strategy RPG Indie game. Wow, they got long genres, right? So what’s so unique about Dungeon Defenders? Well, besides the fact that it reminds a bit about Sanctum, it is again the fact that you’re not only building towers. You also got a hero, which you play with, and that hero is a key part in keeping your defences.

Now I went on Steam and bought this nice little piece of work for 11,99€ and I must say that it was worth every cent. So what is the point of Dungeon Defenders? Well!

In Dungeon Defenders you control one out of four (9 with DLCs) heroes and defend these so called ‘Eternia Crystals’ from waves of evil monsters. An Eternia Crystal is a crystal (darr?) which has lots of evil monsters imprisoned in it. Your parents said “Hey! Everything is fine, let’s go hold a vacation!” and left their children to watch out the castle. They accidently smack an Eternia crystal, and now they have to defend the rest so that they don’t fall in the paws of the evil guys.

Playing the game

Startup screen :P

Now as any outright n00b I went playing the tutorial with my mage ‘Tikki.’ What I like is that you’re able to choose between 3 options. Option A is to do a short tutorial. B is to do the full tutorial and C is to completely skip it. The tutorial has been voiced, and allows you to play with instead of just staring at the screen watching a robot play for you. You’ll quickly get the hang of it in no time, and even the dumbest noob will be able to figure out how to play this game.

Now I only said play, not surviving. Dungeon Defenders offers a challenging variety of maps, and challengers in which you can try your skills. One misplaced tower could mean failure, except if your hero is strong enough to take care of it.

However after playing some time alone it can get a bit boring, and a bit hard. But not to worry! There’s a multiplayer option. :D

Playing online as a pro!

Now after clicking multiplayer and selecting my character I looked for a game. Or rather, I had the game look for a game for me. Did you catch that :/?  Oh, you know what I mean! So clicking the big shiny button called “Quick Match” and you’re good to go! You’ll quickly join a game with others on your level, and quickly you become a team. It is as simple as that.

Dungeon Defenders focus a lot on teams coming together to try and defeat these challenges. Even without internet, you can hook, up to four players, to your computer and all play Dungeon Defenders. All four of you can also go online, and look for challenges.

Let's kick some Dark Elf behinds!

Once you’re in the game, if you’re new, you’ll quickly get told what to do, and where to do it. No one goes “OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, LET ME DO IT!” The community is friendly, and quickly you gather up some mates that you’ll play with. It can be hard to get your friends to play with you though, because Dungeon Defenders requires a descent computer to run. A fun fact is that the engine used to create Sanctum is the same they’ve used to create this game :D

Google, my dear friend!

Now after doing a little bit of a googling (Is that a word) I found out that Dungeon Defenders is an improved game of a demonstration done on the Unreal Development Kit’s website to show off the power of the tools. It’s a fun way to see if you like it, and it did hold me entertained. However, I do recommend that you go and buy the game, as the game has improved so much more than this demonstration, with tons of more maps, challenges, heroes, and I could go on.

Quickly summing it all up

If you do not know you’d like it I recommend you go play the demonstration (Link here) to see if the genres fits you. If it does I do REALLY recommend that you go buy it. It can be bought on steam for 11,99€ which is a good price for the limitless hours of entertainment ahead.

Now, back to washing my DVDs.

Sanctum Review

Hello everyone!

Right, so my first review is going to be about the game Sanctum (Available on Steam for 9,99€). I’ve tried out the singleplayer mode and played around a bit :D

What is Sanctum?
Sanctum is a first person shooter tower defense game (Did you catch that? I hardly did xD). It was made by Coffe Stain Studio and can be bought off steam for 9,99€ (3€ or lower on sale ;D). Take on the role as an elite soldier sent out to protect your home town against all kind of creatures (Aliens I think…) and was released back in April the 15th 2011 (I’m late on it, I know -.-).

Now, the thing that makes Sanctum stand out is that it isn’t entirely based on tower defense alone. You get to play a key-role in defending ‘The Core’ from the aliens by using guns to shoot down hordes of enemies.  The point of the whole game is basicly to protect the core at all costs (You can’t die, then you lose the map! Hurray for checkpoints!)

Playing Sanctum
Hurray! I built my first turret! :D

Now I started up the game, loaded the tutorial like any fresh noob would do and tried my best to follow the instructions. Everything was pretty clear and easy to understand. You got through the level understanding how to play the game without much more trouble, and had fun while doing it :3

Now to test out the full features of my game, so far so good, I went into singleplayer mode and tried it out alone. You have fun shooting aliens and building like a crazy to make sure they can’t get through but, alas, it gets boring in the end. Being alone in his game isn’t that much fun, and you can quickly get bored of running back and forth without anyone to help you. Singeplayer isn’t my kind of favorite way to play, but the storyline seems pretty good, in my opinion (I’m a story-freak. I’m reading books about World of Warcraft!.

So when you get bored of playing alone, what then…. Multiplayer of course! I am very happy that Sanctum has this option. In multiplayer you can play up to 4 players together fighting waves of monsters. This can either be survival mode, where you fight until your core can take no more, or a set wave number, where you fight until you’ve beaten every wave. It takes some time but keeps you entertained. When you type, a sweet little robot reads it out loud for you, and I couldn’t help but laugh at this.

You're able to see how you've placed your towers on the map, as with any other tower defense :)

All in all it is very entertaining at start. But I think it might get a little boring in the length.  If you want to play this game I defiantly recommend that you bring some friends with you, otherwise it might get kind off boring. Eventually, buy the 4 pack to save some money :) But if you’re tough enough, then you’re free to play it forever alone ^^ However, this does not mean it's easy! No, no, a single tower out of place, or a single block not placed right can mean that you lose. And that's on the easiest settings! o0 Say wuuut!

I’ll give the game 6 out of 10 Tikki’s gaming points :D
It's been designed well, but doesn't last as singeplayer.

*Points a sniper at you*
